Traveling with medicine

Traveling with medicine requires special consideration. Always travel with medicine in properly labeled containers. Never mix multiple medications in one container. Take the proper amount of medicine with you when traveling. The recommended amount is enough for the trip plus 2 or 3 days worth (in case of layover or delay). Leave a sufficient amount of medicine at home in case the luggage or travel bag is lost or left behind. Proper handling of medicine is important when traveling. If medicine requires refrigeration, use an insulated travel case. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations by keeping your medicine in a carry-on bag. Always travel with a list of your medicines, what medicine are being used for, your doctors name & phone number, and your pharmacy name and phone number.

Knowing your medicine

Always be familiar with name (s) of your medication. Try to know what individual medicine is being used for. Know what the side effects are of the medication and what foods or drinks should be avoided while taking them. Know if your medicine makes you more susceptible to the outside elements like sun, heat or cold.

Special consideration for older adults and medicine

image

As we get older, the number of medicines typically increases, for one reason or another. Confusion regarding the individual medicine is not uncommon. Most of the confusion can be avoided by maintaining good communication with your doctor and pharmacists. Side effects between different medicines can be managed with the proper knowledge and help form your healthcare professionals. The use of multiple doctors or pharmacies (without proper referrals) is not recommended because of the increase of unwanted or dangerous side effects or interactions. The body's response to medicine changes as we age, so necessary adjustments are warranted in many cases. Compliance with medicine regimens is crucial as the number of different medicines increases. Forgetfulness is a common problem, but can be reduced with counseling, training and if necessary, special packaging or medication planners.

Children and medicine

Children and medication require special handling. A common problem with children is stopping the medicine too soon if the child is feeling better or because of the child's refusal to take the medicine. Special flavoring can be used to aid in "disguising" the medicine for better compliance. Storing medicine

Always keep medicines organized in an convenient location. Most medicine does NOT need to be refrigerated and should not be kept there for convenience because of excess moister. Medicine should also not be kept in the bathroom "medicine cabinet" or kitchen counter near the sink for the same reason. The bedroom or other living area is the best place to keep your medication. Medicine requiring refrigeration should be kept in a separate container or plastic box in one area of the refrigerator and labeled to avoid any confusion.
